COMUNICATO STAMPA → Presentazione del libro Orkney A&B Editrice 2019 di Marco Bussagli. La storia dell’Italian Chapel, che tuttora esiste, ed è considerata la quarta Chiesa più importante della Gran Bretagna, è assolutamente vera, così come sono reali i prigionieri italiani che la costruirono, cui sono stati di poco modificati i nomi. Anche la Storia d’amore nell’ambito della costruzione della Chiesetta è vera, come è reale il segno che Palumbo lascia nella cancellata, dove scolpisce un cuore di ferro che si vede solo aprendo l’entrata e sapendo dove guardare. Pure l’interesse della Standard Oil per le Isole Orcadi è vero, nel senso che ricerche per nuovi giacimenti petroliferi sono state intraprese con successo. Vero è pure l’articolo di giornale, uscito nel Marzo del 1946 sul Daily Telegraph, che annunciava l’abbattimento dell’Italian Chapel, causa dell’equivoco su cui si basa tutta la vicenda. Reali, poi, sono alcuni personaggi che compaiono nel Romanzo, a cominciare da Lawrence Powell al quale, oggi, è intitolata la Biblioteca dell’Università di Los Angeles, come pure Roy Chapman, davvero esistito e ispiratore del personaggio di Indiana Jones, sir Cunnigham o, ancora, certe situazioni come il trasloco dell’Ambasciata americana a Londra. Vera è la mitica telefonata con Cianchetti che davvero tornerà a restaurare la Chiesetta, come pure il servizio dedicato dalla BBC al piccolo edificio religioso. Vere, poi, sono tutte le locations che la vicenda attraversa, inclusa la California University esemplata sul Sant’Ambrogio di Milano, e le descrizioni degli edifici e degli alberghi, tutte studiate o viste personalmente dall’Autore. Infine, anche i giorni delle settimane fra la fine di Luglio e quella di Agosto del 1959, nonché la Domenica 15 Maggio del 1960, quando arriva il telegramma, sono veri e corrispondono ai Lunedì, Martedì, Mercoledì, Giovedì, Venerdì, Sabato o Domeniche di quegli anni. Orkney in pillole. Tre lustri dopo la Seconda Guerra Mondiale, John Rocker, patron della grande compagnia petrolifera americana Standard Oil cerca nuovi giacimenti di petrolio. L’interesse si appunta sulle Isole Orcadi. Frank Chapman, brillante Ingegnere minerario, viene incaricato di acquistare l’isoletta di Lamb Holm che pare il luogo migliore per collocare le trivelle. Quando Chapman si reca sul luogo, ma si accorge che l’unico punto adatto è occupato dall’Italian Chapel, la Chiesetta del Campo 60 costruita come omaggio all’Italia dai prigionieri italiani (i P.O.W.) impiegati nella costruzione delle Churchill Barriers. Chapman conosce il giovane Cameriere Emanuel che con i suoi racconti gli fa vivere quegli anni. Il racconto del Cameriere rievoca personaggi coloriti e vari episodi che fanno rivivere davanti agli occhi dell’Ingegnere l’atmosfera singolare di quel luogo, le piccole gioie e gli affanni giornalieri di un microscopico universo che diffondeva, però, una luce di pace e di fede nella tempesta della guerra. Chapman comprende l’importanza di quel Monumento e si adopera perché il progetto sia mutato in una piattaforma marina. Arriva nelle Orcadi John Rocker che tenta di acquistare l’Isola. In una riunione concitata Chapman capisce che Emanuel è il figlio di uno dei prigionieri e che quella Chiesa è anche un Monumento all’amore. La Chiesetta si salverà, ma non la carriera di Chapman …

… La grande compagnia petrolifera Standard Oil, nell’Estate del 1959, decide di cercare altri giacimenti petroliferi e indirizza i propri interessi verso le Isole Orcadi. Frank Chapman, Ingegnere minerario che lavora da due anni nella sede centrale di Baltimora, riesce a farsi affidare l’incarico grazie a Marilyn Jefferson, la bella segretaria di John Rocker (Presidente della holding), con cui vive appassionati momenti erotici. Nonostante l’innegabile, reciproca attrazione, Frank non riesce, a impostare un rapporto stabile perché, sebbene desideri sposare Marilyn, è troppo sensibile al fascino femminile che rende contraddittorio e discontinuo il suo sentimento. A far decidere Rocker in favore di Chapman era stata la dimostrazione da parte di quest’ultimo che non sarebbe stato necessario costruire una piattaforma marina per l’estrazione del greggio, come proponeva il collega rivale Anderson, ma sarebbe stato sufficiente trivellare a terra nell’area in cui sorgeva il Campo 60 dei prigionieri italiani durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale. In particolare, il punto migliore pareva quello un tempo occupato dalla Chiesetta del Campo, nota come Italian Chapel che Chapman – articolo di giornale alla mano – dimostra essere stata sgomberata, con le altre baracche, all’inizio del secondo dopoguerra. Rocker, attratto da quella conveniente proposta, incarica Chapman d’informarsi sulla proprietà dell’isoletta di Lamb Holm che ospitava il piccolo edificio di culto, e di curarne l’acquisto per la Compagnia. Per soddisfare la richiesta, Frank si tuffa in Biblioteca, prima a Baltimora dove conosce Miss Castagna, cui fa improvvidi complimenti, e poi a Los Angeles, dove resta affascinato sia dall’Architettura della California University, ispirata al Sant’Ambrogio di Milano, sia da Lawrence Powell, Direttore storico di quella Biblioteca. Purtroppo, le ricerche, sebbene gli squadernino davanti agli occhi la singolare storia delle Orcadi, non lo portano a conoscere il nome del proprietario. In più, al ritorno da Los Angeles, trova Marilyn sul piede di guerra perché Miss Castagna, sua amica, le aveva riferito dei suoi inopportuni apprezzamenti. La ragazza, perciò, litiga con Frank che cerca invano di scusarsi. Affranto, Chapman sta per rinunciare all’incarico; ma, grazie all’aiuto del collega Lewis White, riesce a sapere che quelle terre sono di Lord Eric Roland Lyon Sinclair, il cui nome compare sull’annuario del 1957 di Who’s who. Partito finalmente alla volta di Londra per trattare l’acquisto deve constatare, però, che Lord Sinclair è passato da poco a miglior vita e quindi è costretto ad andare ad Edimburgo, luogo d’origine della famiglia del nobile scozzese; ma prima spedisce a Marilyn una monumentale bottiglia di profumo Chanel n° 5. Giunto nella capitale scozzese Chapman, grazie all’aiuto della Dottoressa Adele Douglas, Direttrice dell’Archivio della General Register House che gli dimostra una fugace attrazione, si mette sulle tracce dell’erede, anche se non riesce a trovarlo all’indirizzo di residenza da dove era stato sfrattato per insolvenza. Tuttavia, grazie a una serie di coincidenze e fraintendimenti, scopre che il giovane Lord Sinclair è proprio quell’allampanato ragazzone – familiarmente chiamato Duncan (il diminutivo del cognome) – che lo ospita in una dimessa villa alla periferia di Edimburgo, adibita a Bed and Breakfast. Presi accordi per acquistare l’isola al prezzo di un milione di sterline, Chapman parte pieno di entusiasmo alla volta di Kirkwall, la principale città delle Orcadi, per portare a termine la sua missione. Come arriva, avverte Rocker del successo ottenuto con un telegramma e chiama la ditta per iniziare i lavori di trivellazione. Il giorno dopo visita la cittadina e familiarizza con la piccola comunità di Orcadiani, mentre la sera si reca a Lamb Holm per un sopralluogo. Qui si accorge, con grande disappunto, che il piccolo edificio religioso è sempre in piedi. Entra in Chiesa e, per il nervosismo, finisce per litigare con una donna raccolta in preghiera. Provato dallo sconforto, prende alloggio nel modesto alberghetto Commodore, sito nelle vicinanze della cappellina dove conosce Emanuel, il giovane cameriere. L’indomani, con lui, fa un sopralluogo all’Italian Chapel per cercare di capire la vicenda e provare a trovare una soluzione. Emanuel, con continui flash-back gli racconta la storia della Chiesetta e dei prigionieri italiani (i P.O.W.) del Campo 60, impiegati nell’impresa delle Curchill Barriers, le barriere costruite contro le navi tedesche trasformate in strade di collegamento. Il piccolo edificio, grazie alla partecipazione spontanea di tutti, fu concepito per essere la summa dei principali monumenti italiani (dal duomo di Milano a quello di Siena, dal Palazzo Ducale di Venezia a Monreale) tutti citati nella decorazione della volta, delle pareti e della facciata abbellita da due vetrate con i patroni d’Italia, San Francesco e Santa Caterina da Siena. Quest’opera corale fu realizzata grazie alla perizia di un manipolo di straordinari Artigiani fra cui spiccano le figure di Domenico Cianchetti e Franco Palumbo, il fabbro travolto da una grande storia d’amore con Mary Mac Kay. Una vicenda sentimentale, questa, che s’intrecciò fin da subito con la costruzione della Chiesetta, da Palumbo e dalla giovane Mary trasformata in occasionale nido d’amore. Per questo, Franco ne eternò il ricordo in un particolare nascosto nella cancellata da lui scolpita in ferro battuto. Il racconto del Cameriere rievocava personaggi coloriti e molteplici episodi che fanno rivivere davanti agli occhi dell’Ingegnere l’atmosfera singolare di quel luogo, le piccole gioie e gli affanni giornalieri di un microscopico universo che diffondeva, però, una luce di pace e di fede nella tempesta della guerra. Per questo, Chapman rimane turbato e cerca un espediente per evitare di dover abbattere la Chiesetta. Il giorno dopo, lascia il Commodore, dove riconosce la donna incontrata due giorni prima nella Chiesetta, e si reca a Kirkwall con l’idea d’inviare a Rocker una relazione che dimostri come sia più conveniente la piattaforma marina. Per rilassarsi e, sicuro di avere ancora un po’ di tempo, torna ai negozi della cittadina di Kirkwall. Tuttavia, la notizia che sia lì per abbattere l’edificio si è diffusa in un baleno fra gli Orcadiani che lo bersagliano di dispetti per convincerlo ad andarsene. Rientrato in albergo, Chapman riceve una telefonata da Marilyn, che lo ha ormai perdonato e lo ringrazia per lo splendido dono della bottiglia di profumo. Lo informa, però, che il Presidente della Standard Oil sta per raggiungerlo a Orkney. Chapman è disperato e si butta a capofitto nella stesura della relazione che lo prende tutta la notte. Il giorno dopo telefona a Smith e cerca di convincerlo a ritardare la sua presenza a Lamb Holm per iniziare le trivellazioni. Naturalmente, fa un buco nell’acqua e allora si dedica a completare la relazione. Quella sarebbe stata uno strumento inattaccabile anche nei confronti di Smith che, davanti alla Scienza geologica, si sarebbe dovuto arrendere. Il medesimo ragionamento, naturalmente, valeva per Rocker. Per questo, l’indomani Chapman, con la relazione finalmente pronta, si reca alla posta dove cerca invano di spedirla a Baltimora. L’impiegato glielo impedisce, ma gli dà un telegramma che annuncia l’arrivo, ormai fra un’ora, di John Rocker. La situazione precipita. Quel 25 Agosto 1959 si presentano a Kirkwall sia Rocker in persona, furente per l’inettitudine di Cahpman, sia Anderson che gongola per l’insuccesso del rivale, nonché, il signor Smith, titolare della ditta di trivellazione. Infine, arriva pure Duncan a pretendere i suoi soldi. La vicenda conclusiva si svolge nella locanda di Sue Wilson, dove si riuniscono, insieme a curiosi ed occasionali avventori, tutti i personaggi conosciuti da Chapman in quei giorni, inclusa la donna della Chiesa che si rivela essere Mary Mac Kay, che era stata la donna di Palumbo da cui aveva  avuto, senza che lui lo sapesse, Emanuel. L’improvvisata assemblea assiste a una litigata epica fra Rocker e Chapman che viene licenziato, ma grida sul muso del Presidente della Standard Oil che nessuno, per fare impresa, può passare sulla Storia e sui sentimenti di tutti. Lui lo aveva imparato da suo padre Roy, gloria nazionale nel campo della Paleontologia, e Direttore del Museo Americano di Storia Naturale di New York. L’Isola, con un’asta improvvisata sollecitata da Lord Grease (opportunamente convocato dal Parroco), viene messa all’incanto e acquistata dal nobiluomo, azionista di maggioranza della Bank of Scotland, che tacita Duncan azzerando pure i debiti dello zio. Grease, però, non rivende la proprietà a Rocker che se ne va sbattendo la porta, inseguito da Smith, preoccupato di recuperare i soldi della mancata impresa. La Chiesetta è salva! Chapman rimane a Kirkwall, dove intreccia un’affettuosa amicizia con Mary Mac Kay e si adopera per il restauro dell’Italian Chapel che è divenuta famosa in tutta la Gran Bretagna grazie a un servizio della BBC. Riescono perfino a contattare Cianchetti invitandolo a Orkney per ritoccarla. Una Domenica di Maggio del 1960 giunge un telegramma che sembra annunciare proprio l’imminente visita di Domenico Cianchetti. Invece, la missiva è di Franco Palumbo che annuncia il suo arrivo a Lamb-Holm perché vuole riabbracciare la sua amata Mary. A Chapman cade il mondo addosso.

 

 

MARCO BUSSAGLI cenni biografici

Marco Bussagli nasce a Roma il 9 Dicembre del 1957. Laureato in Storia dell’Arte, è Professore di prima fascia presso l’Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma dove insegna Anatomia Artistica. È stato Professore a contratto di Storia dell’Arte Contemporanea alla Facoltà d’Architettura dell’Università La Sapienza di Roma. Ha vinto una Borsa di Studio per l’Accademia di San Luca e la British Library. Borsista presso il Warburg and Courtauld Institute di Londra nel 1989, ha insegnato presso l’Università di Macerata dove ha tenuto Corsi d’Iconografia degli strumenti musicali. Ha insegnato Iconologia per il corso di specializzazione in Storia dell’Arte Medievale e Moderna presso l’Università L.U.M.S.A. di Palermo. Presso la L.U.M.S.A. di Roma, ha tenuto Corsi di Storia dell’Arte Medievale per il Master in Storia dell’Arte Medievale e Moderna. Ha collaborato dal 1985 al 2009 con l’Istituto dell’Enciclopedia Italiana. È stato Direttore scientifico de I Grandi Temi della Pittura in 60 volumi per la Casa Editrice De Agostini. Nel 2000, con Mario D’Onofrio ha curato la Mostra Le ali di Dio, per il Castello Svevo di Bari e per Mont-Saint Michele. Nel 2008 è stato Curatore, insieme a Claudio Strinati, della Mostra Il ‘400 a Roma, esposta nelle Sale del Museo del Corso. Nel 2011, ha curato, con Maria Grazia Bernardini, la Mostra Il Rinascimento a Roma nel segno di Michelangelo e Raffaello, sempre per il Museo della Fondazione Roma. Per la Fondazione, ha poi curato nel 2015 Barocco a Roma. La meraviglia delle arti. Ha curato nel 2014 a Palazzo Magnani di Reggio Emilia, la Mostra dedicata a Enigma Escher. Paradossi grafici fra arte e geometria, insieme a Piergiorgio Odifreddi. Successivamente, nelle Sale del Chiostro del Bramante a Roma, in accordo con la Escher Foundation, ha curato un’altra Mostra dedicata ad Escher che ha affrontato tutti i temi della poetica del grande incisore olandese. Una versione ampliata dell’Esposizione è stata la più visitata del 2016 al Palazzo Reale di Milano. Ha curato le più importanti Mostre di Escher in Italia fino al 2018. Ha collaborato con Il Giornale e a Bell’Italia, scrive per Avvenire, Art e Dossier e Il Giornale dell’arte. Ha realizzato alcuni dei Cd’Art di La Repubblica, con GiuntiMultimedia. Nel 1995 e nel ’96 è stato consulente per la RAI a Videosapere. Ha collaborato con SAT2000. Ha lavorato per Sky-Art International. Ha collaborato per oltre quindici anni con l’Enciclopedia Italiana Treccani quale Autore e Redattore. Ha al suo attivo oltre duecento pubblicazioni tra libri, testi scientifici, voci enciclopediche e articoli di alta divulgazione. Ha scritto, con la presentazione di Antonio Paolucci, una Guida ai Musei Vaticani, Firenze 2011. I suoi libri sono tradotti in Inglese, Francese, Tedesco, Spagnolo, Russo, Polacco, Rumeno, Giapponese e Coreano. Nel 2016 pubblica Bosch. Tavole di diverse bizzarrie (Giunti) per il Cinquecentenario della scomparsa del grande Pittore olandese. Come Pittore ha esposto alla Biennale di Venezia del 1986, nonché in Mostre collettive e personali. Alcune sue Opere sono in Musei pubblici e prestigiose Collezioni private. È Cavaliere della Repubblica Italiana per meriti artistici e scientifici.
